SUMMARY

Optical networking innovation continues at a rapid pace as the industry moves into 2025. This symposium focuses on two important areas of innovation for the coming years, each at different levels of maturity.

This session will be moderated by Simon Stanley, Analyst at Large, Components & Subsystems, Heavy Reading

11:00 AM Session One - Driving Coherent Pluggables Across Data Centers and Metro Networks

Globally, operators are under tremendous pressure to boost revenues, a requirement that is becoming particularly urgent as operators invest heavily in networks and spectrum licenses for 5G. Transport networks have a vital role to play in differentiated services and new revenue opportunities supporting 5G mobility and the edge and underpinning advanced wireline services.

Coherent pluggables have come a long way since the first 400ZR modules were introduced in late 2019. The development of ZR+ modules and open specifications for longer reach, and more flexible applications, has added to the attraction of coherent pluggable modules for use in data center interconnect, metro and even long-haul networks.

As the second generation of coherent pluggables are being deployed in Networks, this session will explore the opportunities and challenges for service providers both today, and into the future.

This session will address:

  • Coherent pluggables today and the state of disaggregation.
  • Pushing coherent pluggable boundaries 800G ZR+ and Open ROADM
  • Interoperability, automation and the role of AI
  • The future of coherent pluggables including 1600ZR and 1600ZR+

12:45 PM Session Two - Open Line Systems: Driving the Optical Autobahn for DCI and AI

With data center interconnect (DCI) exceeding 50% annual growth and nascent but accelerating AI traffic expected to sustain/increase this growth rate for years to come, optical networks are adapting. With increasing baud rates, plateauing spectral efficiency, accelerating optical engine innovation, increasing use of coherent pluggables, and supply security driving multi-vendor network designs, next-generation open line systems are emerging. In this symposium, we will discuss how open line systems are evolving to support hyperscale connectivity, enhanced ROADM designs, and comprehensive software automation to efficiently support any wave from any optical engine generation.

This session will address:

  • What’s driving the increased need for disaggregated and open optical networks
  • New opportunities to expand capacity on today’s fibers
  • How a new generation of optical line systems can efficiently support both embedded and pluggable optics
  • How next-generation ROADM and line system designs can support hyperscale DCI applications, including IP over DWDM
  • The role of automation in disaggregated and open optical networks
